Kids Review Fashion Week
Bored of the traditional reviews of fashion week shows, we invited a bunch of adorable 8-12 year old kids to review the most ‘avant garde’ looks from the recent SS16 shows and their reactions are priceless! From the runways of New York, London and Milan we got some seriously honest opinions on fashion from the eyes of children. Everything from crazy animal jumpers to Kanye’s infamous Yeezy Season 2 collection gets reviewed! Check out what the Anna Wintour’s of tomorrow have to say below...
Introducing Lin, Victoria, Jack, Finn, Noah, Lucy and little Elby. A group of school kids just like any other, but with very strong opinions on fashion and very vivid imaginations!
Whether they live for style or couldn’t care less about risking a fashion ‘faux pas’, these kids certainly think they know a thing or two about the Spring/Summer 16 collections and we couldn’t get enough of their responses.
Home to the first ever fashion week back in 1943, NYFW is known for it’s high-profile designers and glossy attendees. However there were certainly some ‘out there’ looks from the Big Apple this season. Kicking off with the undoubtedly hip V Files show that took place on September 10. The cultural network-cum-shopping community showcases the work of a gang of cool designers namely Namilia, Fengchen Wang, Kozaburo, David Ferreira and Moses Gauntlett Cheng; and it was Ferreira who pushed the boundaries of craziness with his fluffy, yellow Big-Bird creation that prompted some pretty memorable reactions from our kids. The same goes for Namilia’s inflatable plastic dress that reminded them of pretty much everything from bubbles to an octopus.
Next up was the Betsey Johnson runway show, which marked 50th fashion show anniversary! Famous for brightly coloured pink and red evening dresses, the kids loved her take on Barbie-like couture and her fun colour palette - you might have a new market there Betsey! One we certainly couldn’t miss out was American designer Jeremy Scott, the king of mad fashion and showstopping looks influenced by pop culture. The kids fell in love with the funny faces that adorned his jumpers, tops and skirts. And we couldn’t help but fall in love with the kids as they attempted to recreate the faces!
And last but by no means least, was Kanye West, who surprised the fashion world when he (on alarmingly short notice) announced that he would showcase his Yeezy Season 2 collection during NYFW. His collection was of course worn by his wife Kim Kardashian and let’s just say… the kids had quite a lot to say about those all brown outfits!
London Fashion Week is famous for supporting young talent, it’s it-girls and embracing eccentricity. Londoners never shy away from an out-there look and are the first to set trends and fly the flag for diverse style so it’s no surprise we found some pretty outrageous looks here!
The ever mysterious MM6 Maison Margiela kicked things off with their collection which referenced London’s former club scene. As noted by the children, plastic was very on trend in this show! Next up was legendary British designer Pam Hogg who showcased a collection heavily influenced by 80’s rebellion and childhood dreams gone wrong, her superhero jumpsuits and political statement dresses garnered unforgettable reactions from our mini fashion critics. Channel Pam Hogg style with a lace bodysuit on Stylight.
Shoe designer Sophia Webster is known for her playful, realistic designs and cult celebrity following and her presentation this season didn’t disappoint. Wondering why mermaids modeling her shoes were on top of washing machines? Turns out this set-up was a part of a conceptual idea: the mermaids washed their tails, hung them to dry and then spent a few hours of freedom in Sophia Webster's gorgeous shoes.
Established in 1958, Milan fashion week is home to ultra, sexy glamour and luxe fashion powerhouses such as Prada, Versace, Pucci, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. For Alessandro Michele’s much anticipated second collection for Gucci he upped the glam factor and threw in a dash of geek chic by emblazoning wide ties with bejeweled lady birds which sparked smiles from the children! A symbol of luck and playfulness, lady birds seemed fitting with the colourful and dazzling SS16 show.
